Energy is transferred to the flywheel when the train brakes, which spins faster to store the energy. As the train sits in the station, the diesel engine can be switched off, cutting down on pollution and protecting staff and passengers from the fumes that diesel engines produce. When the train leaves the station, the energy stored in the flywheel is used to get the train moving again.
Our models estimate that on commuter lines, savings of 38% on diesel can be achieved by partnering the diesel engine with the a flywheel.
Flywheels can also offer an interesting opportunity to cut down the cost of electrifying lines. When electrifying a line, it is expensive to get around difficult objects on the line, such as bridges and tunnels.
