The story so far
The Gyrotricity prototype flywheel was developed by DBS and City, University of London, in a £1m project led by Nissan and sponsored by Innovate UK.
The prototype comprised a 25kW 250KJ system for automotive applications.
The flywheel was successfully demonstrated at City, University of London. The project included extensive safety tests demonstrating that it is safe by design.
DBS has also delivered on a pre-project study for RSSB to simulate the use of Gyrotricity technology for rail transport. Results showed a 40% energy saving when the flywheel is being used as a regenerative braking system. This led to the award of £702k from RSSB to develop the flywheel for a rail application.
